Cylindrical Lock Functions Explained

On bored commercial locksets, function describes how the outside and inside trim operate (keyed, free, locked, always locked). Lever / knob / rose options pick the visible trim style that must match the series and door schedule.

Common commercial bored-lock functions

Manufacturers publish ANSI function numbers; product pages usually show a plain-language label such as:

  • Entry / vestibule — outside key retracts latch; inside free; often with deadbolt options on interconnected sets.
  • Office / entrance — key locks outside lever or knob; inside free for egress.
  • Classroom — key locks/unlocks outside; inside always free.
  • Storeroom — outside always locked; key retracts latch; inside free.
  • Privacy — inside button or thumbturn; emergency outside release on many series.
  • Passage — both sides free (no locking).
  • Dummy / single dummy — pull-only trim with no latch (pair with a separate latchset or deadbolt as specified).

Always match the function code on the submittal to the product option — titles vary by brand even when the ANSI function is the same.

Levers, knobs and roses

  • Lever Design / Lever / Lever Style — handle geometry (return-to-door levers for ADA clearance, decorative levers, tactile/abrasive options where specified).
  • Knob Design / Knob — round or decorative knobs on knob chassis series.
  • Rose / Rose & Escutcheon — rose diameter and plate style that cover the bore.

Shop by leaf: commercial levers, commercial knobs, and deadbolts.
